What
is Texas SkillsUSA?
Texas SkillsUSA is a non-profit Youth organization
which facilitates Trade and Industry Education, enhances curriculum
and involves all students. Students develop essential skills such
as communication and teamwork. They also gain a competitive edge
in the work force. Teachers benefit as well by enhancing their
occupational
education programs, improve attitudes in the classroom and gain
local business support and participation.
Vocational-technical education, the School-to-Career
initiative, and many other movements in education and training reform
have searched for an elusive but key bridge-how to have an active
partnership between public education and private business. SkillsUSA
has been that bridge in Texas since 1948 and nationally since 1965.
VICA changed its name to SkillsUSA on July 4, 1999 to meet
the needs of Corporate America. SkillsUSA is a national student
organization that works directly with business and industry to maintain
American productivity, quality and competitiveness. There are more
than 1000 Texas SkillsUSA chapters at public schools and trade/technical
schools. Texas SkillsUSA serves nearly 15,500 student and professional
members who are enrolled in trade, technical, industrial and health
occupations programs.
Through a proven system that produces quality-trained,
well-rounded, entry-level employees, Texas SkillsUSA brings
together educators, administrators, corporate America, labor organizations,
trade associations and government. The result is a coordinated effort
that addresses America's need for a globally competitive, educated
and skilled work force.
In addition, SkillsUSA teaches the
importance of developing leadership skills, positive attitudes and
pride in workmanship. Texas SkillsUSA students associate schoolwork
with real work. Texas SkillsUSA prepares students for employment
by introducing them to corporate quality culture. Texas SkillsUSA
emphasizes respect for the dignity of work, high standards in trade
ethics, superior workmanship, quality and safety. |
Texas SkillsUSA is a nonprofit and tax-exempt
student organization under the
